PhD Student position for 3 years

Involvement of pulmonary neuroendocrine cells (PNEC) in cystic fibrosis

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most frequent autosomal recessive disease which affects the physiology of the lung. It is due to mutations in the Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator (CFTR) gene. The CFTR protein functions as a Cl- channel.

The most common mutation is a missing phenylalanine at position 508 (delF508) and the associated pathology is a failure of the mutated protein to traffic correctly to the plasma membranes. We showed that anxA5 overexpression increases delF508-CFTR membrane localization. Because anxA5 is increased by GnRH and because PNEC are neuroendocrine cells, our aim is to study their involvement in CF.

Immunochemistry will be used to visualize the GnRH receptor in human lung from normal and CF patients. Tissues will be dissociated and PNEC will be specifically labelled, separated (laser micro-dissection) and cultured. GnRH expression will be assessed in PNEC (RT-PCR, western blotting, immunochemistry). Using surface plasmon resonance the release of GnRH in the culture medium will be assessed. The effect of PNEC upon surrounding airway epithelial cells will be studied: 16HBE14o- (wild type CFTR expressing cells) and CFBE41o- (delF508CFTR expressing cells) will be co-cultured with isolated PNEC either in contact or separated by a permeable membrane. Co-cultured 16HBE14o- and CFBE41o- will be submitted to 2D-Gel electrophoresis. The differentially expressed protein will be identified by mass spectrometry. Finally, the effects of co-cultured PNEC upon CFTR localization and function will be assessed in the epithlial cells.

API Fellowship Program. The Nippon Foundation Fellowships for Asian Public Intellectuals (API Fellowships Program) is designed to stimulate the creation of a pool of such intellectuals in the region. They aim to promote mutual learning among Asian public intellectuals and to contribute to the growth of public spaces in which effective responses to regional needs can be generated.
WHAT ARE THE GOALS?

* To create and nurture a community of public intellectuals in the Asian region;
* To promote mutual learning among Asian public intellectuals; and
* To contribute to the growth of public spaces in which effective responses to regional needs can be generated.

In selecting Fellows, API Fellowships Program will favor projects that address critical issues for the region, which use creative and multidisciplinary approaches, and which have some element of advocacy.
WHAT CAN I DO AS A PROJECT?

The project may take several forms: research paper; film; series of journalistic articles; data gathering; building networks; work of art, etc., but must fulfill three conditions: it must NOT be part of your regular employment; it must contribute to the goals of the API Fellowships Program, and fit with the API themes; and it must have tangible output (research paper, film, photo essay, etc.).

The project must be carried out in one or more of the API Participating Countries, but NOT in your native country or country of residence. The current Participating Countries are: Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand.

You will need to find a Host Insitution in the country where you carry out the project.
WHO CAN APPLY?

Anyone involved in the production and exchange of knowledge or ideas in line with the goals of API Fellowships Program. This includes academics, researchers, media professionals, artists, writers, NGO workers, social workers, public servants and others who work for the betterment of society.

General eligibility requirements:

* Applicants must hold the nationality or proper resident status in one of the five (5) Participating Countries and reside in the country at the time of application;
* Applicants must attend an interview at a designated date and place;
* The proposed project by the applicant must take place and should be completed within the period of July 1, 2010 to July 31, 2011 (Note: The API fellowship period must be continuous.);
* Applicants must have a basic knowledge of English or a laungage(s) spoken in the country(ies) where the proposed research and/or activities are conducted; and
* Applicants must be based in the region/country and will continue to be so in the future.

WHAT ARE COMMITMENTS INVOLVED?

After the project year, you must attend the annual API Regional Workshop, which usually takes place in November (for applicants for Fellows Year 2010-2011, it will be in November 2011), and present your results by submitting the papers and other materials. You are strongly encouraged to disseminate the results of your project to a wider audience wherever possible.

By fulfilling your commitments, you will become a member of the API Community. You will be expected to participate in the activities of the Community, and will have the chance to apply for post fellowship programs.
WHAT DOES THE API FELLOWSHIPS PROGRAM PROVIDE?

* A stipend and housing allowance for the time spent overseas on the project, the amount varies by country;
* International transportation costs, for one round trip only;
* Domestic transportation allowance;
* Research allowance to cover computer costs, field expences, books, tranlation fees, etc.; and
* Travel insurance during the fellowship period.

DEADLINE

* The deadline for application submission is August 31, 2009.
* Interviews will take place in September/October/November 2009.
* The results will be announced in February 2010.
* The project must be carried out between July 1, 2010 and July 31, 2011.

Kualifikasi Khusus :

* Pendidikan minimal S1.

Tanoto Foundation, with its vision of alleviating poverty and enhancing human achievements, would like to invites academically well-performing undergraduate and postgraduate students to join its scholarship program. The scholarship is awarded program is carried out based on merit regardless of race, religions, and gender of the applicants, and by upholding well a non-discriminating policy.

Tanoto Foundation will grant scholarships to 300 undergraduate and 50 postgraduate students from any disciplines at its six partner universities, namely;

5. Untuk angkatan 2009, minimum IPK saat ini = 3,25 (skala 4,00). Untuk angkatan 2010, minimum IPK S1 = 3,25 (skala 4,00).
6. Memiliki jiwa kepemimpinan dan kepedulian serta komitmen untuk ikut memajukan bangsa Indonesia

Informasi Beasiswa Beasiswa S1, S2, dan S3 Pemerintah Provinsi Jambi Scholarships

Untuk tahun ajaran 2010/2011, Dinas Pendidikan Provinsi Jambi menawarkan banyak beasiswa yang diperuntukkan untuk berbagai jenjang, mulai dari siswa-siswi SMA sederajat yang ingin melanjutkan studi di perguruan tinggi negeri, mahasiswa S1, serta mahasiswa S3. Beasiswa ini juga terbuka untuk pelajar atau mahasiswa dari luar Provinsi Jambi.


Pemerintah Provinsi Jambi

Adapun syaratnya, bagi para siswa yang ingin melanjutkan ke perguruan tinggi, beasiswa diberikan melalui Seleksi Nasional Masuk Perguruan Tinggi Negeri (SNMPTN) lokal dan sesuai dengan jadwal SNMPTN.
Untuk mahasiswa S-1 di Provinsi Jambi, pelamar beasiswa bisa mendaftar di perguruan tinggi masing-masing, sedangkan yang berasal dari luar kota Jambi harus lebih dulu mengajukan permohonan kepada Gubernur Jambi/Kepala Dinas Pendidikan Provinsi Jambi. Sementara itu, untuk pelamar beasiswa S2 dan S3, baik dari dalam maupun luar Provinsi Jambi, diharuskan mengajukan permohonan lebih dulu kepada Gubernur/Kepala Dinas Pendidikan Provinsi Jambi.
Masih ada lagi beasiswa lainnya, yaitu Beasiswa Khusus Program S-2 MIPA UI. Hanya, beasiswa ini diperuntukkan untuk mereka yang ingin menjadi tenaga pendidik di SMA bertaraf Internasional Provinsi Jambi. Rekrutmen untuk program beasiswa ini dilakukan atas kerjasama antara Dinas Pendidikan Jambi dan Fakultas MIPA UI.
Batas pendaftaran aplikasi bagi pelamar di dalam Provinsi Jambi diberikan sampai 20 Juni 2010 mendatang, sedangkan pelamar dari luar Jambi dibatasi sampai 25 Juni 2010.
